Folders turned into shortcuts? This guide shows you how to remove the USB shortcut virus by yourself, quickly and safely. We’ll start with the best shortcut virus removal software (UsbFix), then a manual method, plus prevention so it won’t come back.
Quick Clean (Recommended)
- Download and run UsbFix on the infected PC.
- Plug in all affected USB drives and memory cards.
- Run Scan, check the log, then click Clean.
- Reboot if prompted and scan again.
Manual Removal (Advanced)
- Enable viewing of hidden/protected files in File Explorer.
- Open Command Prompt (Admin). For each drive (e.g.
E:):E:attrib -h -r -s /s /d *.* - Delete suspicious items at the root:
autorun.inf, unwanted.lnk, unknown executables. - Check persistence:
HKCU/HKLM.../Run, Task Scheduler, proxy settings.
Restore Hidden Files
The shortcut virus hides your real data. UsbFix and the attrib command remove Hidden/System attributes so your folders reappear.
Prevention & Hardening
- Configure/disable AutoPlay: see Enable/Disable AutoPlay in Windows.
- Limit script execution: Disable Windows Script Host if unused.
- Harden endpoints: USBGuard – Protect USB Ports.
- Understand device‑level risks: BadUSB – what it is and how to mitigate.
