USB Shortcut Virus – Complete Guide (Remove It Yourself)

Folders turned into shortcuts? This guide shows you how to remove the USB shortcut virus by yourself, quickly and safely. We’ll start with the best shortcut virus removal software (UsbFix), then a manual method, plus prevention so it won’t come back.

Download UsbFix

Quick Clean (Recommended)

  1. Download and run UsbFix on the infected PC.
  2. Plug in all affected USB drives and memory cards.
  3. Run Scan, check the log, then click Clean.
  4. Reboot if prompted and scan again.

Manual Removal (Advanced)

  1. Enable viewing of hidden/protected files in File Explorer.
  2. Open Command Prompt (Admin). For each drive (e.g. E:):
    E:
    attrib -h -r -s /s /d *.*
  3. Delete suspicious items at the root: autorun.inf, unwanted .lnk, unknown executables.
  4. Check persistence: HKCU/HKLM.../Run, Task Scheduler, proxy settings.

Restore Hidden Files

The shortcut virus hides your real data. UsbFix and the attrib command remove Hidden/System attributes so your folders reappear.
